Info | Brian M. McLaughlin, a resident of Flushing for nearly 30 years, was born in the Inwood section of Manhattan on April 30, 1952. Mr. McLaughlin joined the electrical union training program as an apprentice after graduating from Brentwood High School on Long Island. He became a journeyman electrician in 1977, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. While working in the electrical industry, he continued his education, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree from Empire State College of the State University of New York and a Master's degree in Industrial Labor Relations from the New York Institute of Technology.
Since his election to the Legislature in 1992, Assemblyman McLaughlin has represented the 25th Assembly District. With the Census of 2000, the District was reapportioned to include the communities of Flushing, Whitestone, Fresh Meadows, Flushing Heights, Hillcrest, Briarwood, Kew Garden Hills, Jamaica, Richmond Hill and Ozone Park. The 25th Assembly District, 80% new, is now one of the most ethnically, culturally, and economically diverse legislative districts in the country.
Assemblyman McLaughlin's legislative priorities include criminal justice reform, preservation of residential quality of life; rebuilding New York's aging infrastructure to promote economic development and job growth; consumer protection; housing; and programs and services for older adults.
Assemblyman McLaughlin is the author of more than a dozen state laws, including measures toughening crime laws, restricting the proliferation of bars and taverns, improving health care in his community, helping Holocaust survivors qualify for state assistance, and preserving his district's quality of life. Assemblyman McLaughlin is Chairman of the Real Property Tax Committee, as well as, a member of the Assembly�s Standing Committees on Aging; Alcoholism and Drug Abuse; Cities; Transportation and Ways and Means. He was Chairman of the Assembly's Administrative Regulations Review Commission, which oversees the rule-making process to ensure that agency rules remain faithful to the letter and spirit of the law.
Numerous organizations have honored Assemblyman McLaughlin for his community service including the East Flushing Civic Association, the Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts, the Police and Fire Line of Duty Widows of New York City, the Greater Whitestone Taxpayers Civic Association, the Benjamin Rosenthal chapter of the American Jewish Congress, St. Mel's Athletic Association, the Coalition of Korean American Voters, Flushing Hospital Medical Center, Kiwanis Club of Flushing, the United Irish Counties Association, the State of Israel Bonds program, the American Cancer Society, the Boy Scouts of America, the William Leonard Post of the American Legion, the American-Irish Legislators Association, the New York Branch of the NAACP, the National Council of Young Israel, the Flushing Branch of the YWCA, the Coney Island Chamber of Commerce and the Flushing Chinese Business Association.
Before his election to the Assembly, Mr. McLaughlin served as Pension Director of the electrical industry, where he was responsible for securing pension benefits for 3,000 senior citizens. He was also active in his community as a member of the Board of Directors of the Queens Overall Economic Development Corporation, a member of Community Board 8, and an officer of a local little league.
Outside of the Legislature, Assemblyman McLaughlin has been a community activist in Queens and a leading figure in New York's labor movement for more than two decades. He currently serves as the president of the New York City Central Labor Council, an umbrella organization of unions representing more than 1.5 million working men and women, and has also been a Business Representative of Local Union 3 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, AFL-CIO. Assemblyman McLaughlin also serves as a board member of United Way of Greater New York, a member of the Honorary Advisory Board of Transitional Services of New York, a non-profit mental health agency based in his Flushing district; a board member of the New York City Council on Economic Education; a member of the advisory committee of the Flushing Beacon Center; and a member of the Board of Directors of the Queens Women's Center.
Assemblyman McLaughlin has five children, Brian P., an apprentice electrician, Kelly is married to Gary Rado, Robert attends SUNY Maritime, Cassie who attends Nassau Community College and Meaghan Kathleen was born October 25, 1999. He and his wife Eva reside in Flushing.
