Info | Audrey I. Pheffer has resided in Queens for over 50 years. She has represented the 23rd Assembly District for 20 years and has been overwhelmingly re-elected each term.
Audrey’s community involvement spans four decades, beginning in the early 1960’s when she joined the Association for the Help of Retarded Children (AHRC). Audrey still remains involved with the organization helping to develop many useful services, including after-school and recreation programs. From 1973 to 1977, Audrey worked at the Rockaway Occupational Training Center, where she advocated for special education and job placement for the mentally disabled. With two children enrolled in public school, Audrey took an active role in numerous Parents’ Associations. She successfully worked for additional funding and an improved curriculum for the entire school district. In 1977, Audrey joined the New York City Commission of Human Rights – Neighborhood Stabilization Program. As Acting Director of the Far Rockaway office, Audrey helped organize the Rockaway Interracial Council and block associations. She also developed tenant associations, advocated for tenants’ rights and was a technical advisor for the tenants in housing court. Audrey served as Special Assistant to New York City Council President Andrew Stein and Executive Assistant to State Senator Jeremy S. Weinstein. Though extremely busy as a full-time single working mother and community activist, Audrey returned to school and graduated Cum Laude in 1982 from Queens College of the City University of New York. Audrey I. Pheffer was elected to the State Assembly in a special election on April 28, 1987. In 1995, she was named Chair of the Assembly Consumer Affairs and Protection Committee. She has also chaired the Assembly’s Election Law Committee and the Subcommittee on Outreach and Oversight of Senior Citizen Programs. Audrey has previously served as secretary of the Legislative Women’s Caucus of New York State and a member of the National Order of Women Legislators, serving as President from 1995-96. Audrey’s legislative record clearly demonstrates her dedication to Queens and her commitment to improving economic development, increasing access to quality education, expanding health care, encouraging neighborhood revitalization and protecting the rights of New York’s workforce. Audrey raised two children, Mitchell and Stacey in Far Rockaway, where she currently still resides. She and life partner Glenn Riddell are enjoying their newest roles as doting grandparents to Sam, Natalie, Isabella, Joseph, Michael and Jamie.
