Info | Assemblyman Barry Grodenchik was elected to the New York State Assembly at the general election of November 5, 2002 to serve the communities of Flushing, Queensborough Hill, Flushing on the Hill and parts of East Flushing, North Flushing, Murray Hill and Cedar Grove in Queens County.
Immediately prior to his election to public office, Assemblyman Grodenchik served as a top aide for Queens Borough Presidents Claire Shulman and Helen Marshall. From June of 1991, Assemblyman Grodenchik served as the Chief Administrative Officer for Claire Shulman, overseeing all correspondences, scheduling and general office administration, as well as serving as a member of her executive staff. Assemblyman Grodenchik also served as Ms. Shulman�s appointee to a task force created by Mayor David Dinkins to fight sexual harassment, and organized an annual conference designed to combat domestic violence in the immigrant communities. From January of 2002, Assemblyman Grodenchik served as the director of administration for Helen Marshall as well as her liaison to the Jewish community, a post he also held under Claire Shulman.
Assemblyman Grodenchik began his public service career in September of 1987 in the office of Assemblywoman Nettie Mayersohn when she represented much of what is now the 22nd District. Following his work for Assemblywoman Mayersohn, Assemblyman Grodenchik served as Queens Regional Representative for Mario M. Cuomo from July of 1989 to June of 1991. During his public service work, Assemblyman Grodenchik has assisted literally thousands of individuals to work their way through government bureaucracies and has been honored for his work by the South Queens Community Partnership, the B�nos Malka Academy and the Torah Center of Hillcrest.
In addition to his government service, Assemblyman Grodenchik is a founder of Flushing: A Better Community, is a former Little League manager in the Kew Gardens Hills and Electchester Athletic Associations, is a member of the 107th Precinct Community Counsel.
Assemblyman Grodenchik was born on February 12, 1960 in the Bronx to Nathan and Blanche Grodenchik. He was raised in Pomonok Houses, a New York City Housing Authority development in South Flushing. Assemblyman Grodenchik attended Queens public schools PS 201, IS 237, and Jamaica H.S. In 1981, he received a B.A. in economics and history from Binghamton University.
Assemblyman Grodenchik is married to Debra Grodenchik, Ph.D. who is a professor of developmental mathematics in the department of Reading and Basic Education at Nassau Community College in Garden City. Their pride and joy is their son David.
