Info | Raymond Frederick "Ray" Browne, Sr.
Ray Browne, a DC native committed to obtaining self-determination for the city's residents, fulfilled his first-term campaign promise to create a national outreach program to gain support for full voting rights in the US Congress for DC residents. Through his efforts, he also secured resolutions of support for full voting rights from the city councils of Philadelphia, Chicago, Baltimore, Cleveland, Los Angeles and San Francisco, the governor of Hawaii, the mayors of Atlanta, Detroit and New Orleans, and the Illinois and Alaska state legislatures. These resolutions were then presented to the US House Government Reform Committee.
This year, he also obtained resolutions of support from a group of average size communities around the country including Baker, Louisiana, Lansing, Kansas, Clanton, Alabama, Bellbrook, Ohio, East Point, and Georgia among other areas.
He launched a program designed to obtain support from the governors of all fifty states-an effort undertaken with the full support of Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, Mayor Anthony Williams, and Council Chair Linda Cropp. And, he actively supported legislation to create a locally-elected district attorney's office, to institute local selection of our judges, and to obtain budget autonomy.
Representative Browne continues to work with leaders of other parties, non-partisan groups such as the League of Women Voters, labor groups, the faith community, elected officials nationwide, and the citizens of every city ward as a consistent and vigorous voice for full voting representation for all of DC's citizens.
Ray Browne grew up in the Trinidad section of DC, attended Wheatley Elementary School, and has a long and impressive record of success in both the private and public sectors. Ray and his wife, Barbara, live in Ward 4.
For more than 20 years, Browne has built up one of the city's most respected insurance companies, The Browne Company, and has been recognized as a leader in his industry. In public life before being elected US Representative, Ray Browne has been an ANC Commissioner, a member of the Neighborhood Planning Council, a Mediator for the Washington Superior Court, and a leader in the Democratic Party.
His accomplishments include restoration of the Georgetown police summer detail on weekend evenings; turning the Hurt Home on R Street into a residential treatment center for severely emotionally disturbed youths; fighting for programs to assist substance abusers; and fighting his own insurance industry to obtain coverage for AIDS. He also has been a strong leader in the establishment of mandated alcohol, drug, and mental health benefits for residents of the District and is a track coach at the National Cathedral School.
