Info | Newspaper Editor. A native of San Francisco and a member of California's pioneer Newhall Family, Scott Newhall joined the staff of the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper in 1935 as a photographer. In 1937 he was seriously injured while horseback riding with his wife in Mexico, an injury that ultimately resulted in the amputation of his one of his legs. In 1952 he was appointed Executive Editor of the San Francisco Chronicle. Under his flamboyant leadership, the Chronicle went on to become San Francisco's top newspaper. In 1971 he left the Chronicle to make an unsuccessful campaign for Mayor of San Francisco. In 1963, he and his wife purchased the Newhall Signal newspaper, which they owned until selling it in 1978 and be associated with until 1988.
