Info | New York State Senator, 1993-96, 2001-02, 2009-Present.
New York City Councilman, 2003.
Senator Espada was born in Puerto Rico and raised in Mott Haven. He was brought up in a family forced to survive on public assistance, but was able to climb off the welfare rolls. Senator Espada has an inherent passion for public service and has used his talents to ensure that the poor are afforded greater opportunities for services in their communities. He has forged meaningful and long-standing relationships with the Latino, Black and White residents of his district, who have empowered him to represent them and their needs.
Senator Espada is a product of the New York City public school system and received his B.A. from Fordham University in 1975. Senator Espada received certification from the New York University Real Estate Institute in 1990. In addition, he has received graduate training certificates from the Wharton School of Business, the Columbia University School of Public Health, and graduate-level training at the Hunter School of Social Work.
Senator Espada served as a bilingual teacher in public elementary and high schools in the South Bronx and Manhattan's Lower East Side in the mid-1970's. Between 1977 and 1979, he served as a family counselor and community organizer in Central and West Harlem.
Senator Espada founded the Stevenson Commons Tenants Association in 1977 and served as President of the 948 unit, 2,500 resident Mitchell Lama housing development's tenants association. Concurrently, Senator Espada also created the Mother's Group, which served as the foundation for The New Dimensions in Learning day care centers. These centers continue to serve as models for empowering the dreams of youth in the East Bronx. Senator Espada also established the Senior Action Center, which 22 years later continues to serve seniors in the Soundview community. Senator Espada created a host of youth and community action programs in the 1970's and created a bilingual community newspaper that won the Citizen's Committee of New York's Outstanding Newspaper award. In 1990, Senator Espada was selected to "Who's Who Among Hispanic Americans" as a result of his civic and professional contributions to our society.
Senator Espada has a wealth of experience as a community health care leader and established the Soundview Health Care Network, comprising seven clinics including the Delaney Sisters Health Center, established in 1998. Senator Espada's efforts to improve the provisions of health care services to under served Bronx communities have resulted in over 80,000 visits annually. Both the insured and uninsured are welcome at Senator Espada's clinics as flexible payment plans and waivers afford the most economically-disadvantaged with access to health care.
Senator Espada is an unwavering advocate for justice and civil rights. Senator Espada raised over $300,000 for the Edgar Rivera Fund in 2000 and played a vocal role in working with the Amadou Diallo family in their fight for justice.
Senator Espada and his wife of over 30 years, Connie, reside in the South Bronx and have three children -- Pedro Gautier, Alex and Romero. In 1996, Pedro Gautier Espada, 22 at the time, was elected as New York State's youngest Assemblyman representing the 75th A.D. This achievement marked a historic first as both father and son served simultaneously in the New York State Legislature.
