Info | California State Senator. Republican. Distinguished Attorney and Judge, specializing in real estate law. Noted orator. Employed as chief counsel of the Title and Trust Insurance and Trust Company in real estate law. Unsuccessfully ran for Mayor of Los Angeles on the 1906 non-partisan ticket. Close personal friend of railroad magnate, Henry Huntington who backed his L.A. mayoral candidacy. Was elected on November 8, 1910 to represent California's 34th State Senate district in the 39th-41st Senate Sessions (1911-1915). Was a proponent for Proposition 7 (Establishing the right of Initiative and Referendum in California) in 1911, which passed into law and is now referenced as SCA 22 (1911) which gave California voters the right of initiative and referendum. Also authored SCA 23 (1911) which gave California voters the ability to recall statewide and legislative elected officials. Delegate to Republican National Convention from California, 1912. Early activist for women's suffrage, wage and workday equalization via appointment as Chairman to a special investigative committee for this purpose in 1913. Served on the executive board of the Roosevelt Progressive Republican League of L.A. County, and L.A.'s Political Equality League which was a self-described "men's league for women's suffrage".
