InfoAndrew Jackson Bryant

San Francisco Mayor. A native of New Hampshire, Bryant moved to California during the Gold Rush and settled in San Francisco in 1850, where he entered the wholesale liquor business. In 1867 he was appointed by President Andrew Johnson to serve as the Naval Officer of the Port of San Francisco, and in 1873 he was a co-founder of the State Investment and Insurance Company, of which he was an executive until his death. In 1875 he was elected as the 17th Mayor of San Francisco, serving until 1879. On May 11, 1888 he boarded the San Francisco ferryboat Encinal. Shortly after the boat left shore, Bryant fell overboard into the San Francisco Bay and drowned. Originally buried at San Francisco's Laurel Hill Cemetery, he was later moved to Cypress Lawn Memorial Park in Colma following the outlawing of cemeteries within San Francisco city limits.
