Info | San Francisco Mayor. A native of Massachusetts, Otis moved to California in 1849 where he settled in San Francisco and became a partner in the business of Macondray & Co. In 1859 he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, serving until 1862. In 1873 he was elected the 15th Mayor of San Francisco serving until his death from illness in 1875. He was the first San Francisco Mayor to die while in office. Originally buried in San Francisco's Laurel Hill Cemetery, he was later moved to Cypress Lawn Memorial Park in Colma following the outlawing of cemeteries from San Francisco city limits.
