InfoPreston Kurtz Woodside

Preston Kurtz Woodside comes into notable history when he was reported as having been a member of Colonel Jonathan D. Stevenson's 1st Regiment of New York Volunteers, part of the American occupation army force that landed in California in 1847.

With the war over and awaiting mustering out, Woodside joined a group of soldiers formed up to engage in mining, one such group being named "The Roach Party". It was comprised of Sergeant William Roach (FAG# 5796447) , Aaron Lyons(FAG # 156348291) (later Sheriff of Monterey County), Charles Ogle, Henry J. Wilson, John Wilson, John Munroe, John Hall, Dominic Forbes, Charles C. Clapp, James Harron, James A. Gray, Francis D. Clark and John Wolfe.

During the winter of 1848-49, this party encamped near the Mokelumne River in San Joaquin County and later moved on to Tuolumne County, where they eventually disbanded and went their own way, Woodside, Lyons and Roach ending up in Monterey County.

Preston became a valuable and respected member of the county and state, serving as a Deputy Sheriff, County Clerk, Clerk of the Supreme Court of California and as a private Attorney.

With the cession of California to the United States following the Mexican-American War, the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo provided that the land grants would be honored. As required by the Land Act of 1851, a claim for Rancho Pleyto was filed with the Public Land Commission in 1852, and the grant was patented to William S. Johnson and Preston K. Woodside in 1872.

Slipping into old and age and infirmity, he entered the Soldiers Home (Now the Veterans Home) in Yountville, dying in 1902.
