Info | Owen Paul Sutton
Mr. Sutton was the son of Jacob Sutton. About eight years ago he visited Naples with his two sons, renewed many old acquaintances, and made new friends. It will be seen that he was a valued citizen in the State of his adoption. Owen P. Sutton died in this city last night, after a lingering illness, of acute pneumonia. He was one of the earlier citizens of California. He was born in Ontario County, NY, August 9, 1821. He attended school at Rochester, and subsequently was employed as an engineer on the Black River Canal. He arrived in California on the steamer Oregon, April 1, 1849. He was engaged in various avocations—mercantile and political—for many years. In 1853 he was United States Appraiser for this port. In 1861 he was elected to the Assembly from this city, on the Republican ticket, in which body he made a good record. He went there pledged to help rescue the water front from the control of speculators, and he conspicuously kept his pledge by voting for the Oulton Bill, to the discomfiture of a most powerful lobby. For some years he held the position of Secretary of the Pacific Bank. He was President of the Society of "California Pioneers in 1862-69. He leaves two sons, one in this city and the other a resident of Arizona.
