Info | Damir is a first-generation Canadian whose parents immigrated to Canada in search of a better life. They left the former Yugoslavia with dreams of living in a free and democratic country where they could better raise their family. Damir’s parents instilled in him the value of hard work and perseverance, believing that these can overcome life’s inevitable struggles.
Damir earned a diploma in Airport and Air Traffic Services Management from Georgian College in Barrie, Ontario. He was recruited to serve in the Canadian Armed Forces and quickly became a Commissioned Officer, working as an Air Traffic Control Officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force Reserve. As Damir’s relatives were engaged in a real-life war in Croatia during this time, Damir recognized that his military service was a way to thank Canada for the opportunities it had given him. Receiving the Queen’s Commission remains one of his proudest achievements.
Following his military service, Damir decided to pursue a career in the 1990s as a civilian air traffic controller. Throughout his 26 years at NavCanada, Damir was called upon to resolve countless demanding and stressful situations. These experiences have equipped him with the skills necessary to thrive in Ottawa. Damir’s excellence and hard work was acknowledged in 2013, when he was awarded the NavCanada Chairman’s Award for Employee Excellence for Leadership & Community Service.
Damir and his wife, Ana, have called Winnipeg South Centre home for the past 23 years. Together, they have raised their 3 children and watched their beautiful family grow. During his children’s youth, Damir was an active member of the community and could frequently be seen on the soccer pitches coaching their teams.
Community service has always been a big part of the Stipanovic family. As regular volunteers at Winnipeg Harvest (now Harvest Manitoba), the family was awarded the Winnipeg Family Hero of the Month in 2010. The family has also been involved in raising awareness and fundraising for the Arthritis Society-Prairie Division, where Damir was an advisor to the Board of Directors. This is a cause near and dear to his heart, as one of his children was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis at a young age. Damir also became involved with the volunteer board of Manitoba’s Crohn’s and Colitis Society, and served as the provincial coordinator for the Crohn’s and Colitis M&M BBQ Fundraiser. Damir has served on the Columbus Courts (Manitoba Housing Authority) Board of Directors with great pride. Damir’s extensive involvement and leadership experience have earned him a reputation as a person who brings new energy and who is not afraid of challenges.
Damir has been called to serve many times. Each time, he answers the call to serve – be it in Canada’s Armed Forces, on community soccer fields, in local charities, or through his faith community. He demonstrates compassion by listening to the needs of the community, and exemplifies leadership through his vision and proven ability to enact change. With passion and loyalty, Damir is dedicated to the constituents of Winnipeg South Centre. Once again, he is ready to serve – this time as your Member of Parliament.
