InfoThe Green Party of PEI announced today that Norma Dingwell, community advocate and volunteer, will be running in Montague-Kilmuir in the 2023 provincial election.

Norma Dingwell was born and raised in Montague, PEI, where she attended school. She has worked in a variety of settings including as a security guard, in the food industry as a baker, and as a member of a highways crew. She attended Holland College hoping to start a career as a corrections officer but her plans were cut short when she was critically injured in a traumatic automobile accident that left her disabled.

One of three children in a close knit Island family, Dingwell values family and the strong relationships she has with both family and friends.

“I am very passionate about helping people and being a voice to those who think they don’t have one. I am honored that people trust me enough to tell me their struggles and ask for my help. My motivation is simple. I could have died 19 years ago in the car accident but I was spared. I strongly believe that my purpose here is to help as many people as I can to live their lives and not just exist,” says Dingwell.

Dingwell has volunteered in Eastern PEI for many years. She volunteers as the manager of the Southern Kings and Queens Food Bank and her husband owns a Take-Out restaurant at the Down East Mall in Montague. In 2017, they started a free weekly meal to those in the area who were food insecure. We were shocked at the number of people who showed up in the first week. Some of the families that took part in the weekly meals told them some very heartbreaking stories. Parents were going to bed hungry so they would have food for their children’s lunches. They were forced to discontinue the meals as the number of people needing the service increased and food prices became out of reach.

“ I believe that the direction the Green Party is going in relation to the environment is leading edge. We need to make sure we protect the planet that we live on. And I believe that a basic income guarantee - a program the Greens support - would help decrease the poverty level and the food insecurity that we are facing today. Our unsheltered would have an actual chance to live life and not just exist, struggling day to day,” says Dingwell.

Norma and her husband, Darren have a home in Cardigan where they have resided for the past 14 years.
