Family - As a husband and father, David knows the importance of faith and family. David and Mary have been married for 46 years and are the proud parents of their son, David Counts, a Deputy U.S. Attorney, along with his wife Jill and children Jennifer, Sarah, and Matthew David of San Antonio, Texas, and their daughter Patti Counts Holmes and her husband, Steve Holmes, along with son Seth, of Monument, Colorado. David's work ethic comes from his mother, who resides in Rule, Texas, where she still owns and operates her beauty shop.
Education - David is a graduate of Rule High School. He attended West Texas and North Texas State Universities before graduating from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.
Professional - David has successfully built several businesses from the ground up. He founded Counts Insurance Agency and owned and operated it for thirty-seven years. He continues to operate his real estate firm, Counts Real Estate in Knox City. Mr. Counts has also been involved in the oil industry, serving as Vice President and director of Rolling Plains Well Service, President and Chairman of Chap Operating, Inc., and Vice President and Director of Perry's Pump Service. And like so many of his constituents, David remains involved with agriculture as an owner of farms in Knox County.
Record of Service - Representative Counts is a seventh term legislator, having served since November of 1988. During five of those terms he has been Chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee with jurisdiction over the water-related affairs of the entire state. David has also served on the State Affairs, Redistricting, and other committees.
Military - David is a retired Colonel with over thirty-two years of military service. He is the recipient of the Minute Man Award and was named Brevet Brigadier General in 1999 by then Governor George W. Bush.
Involvement in Religious and Civic Organizations - David is a member of First Baptist Church of Knox City and serves as the Chairman of the Finance Committee. He is an active member of the Gideons International, Lion's Club (a member for over forty-five years), Texas Farm Bureau, Texas Association of Realtors, Independent Insurance Agents of Texas, American Associates of Retired Persons, and is a 32 Mason, K.C.C.H.
