Info | Representative Sean Faircloth returned to legislative service in 2002, having served in the Legislature from 1992-1996. Rep. Faircloth serves on the Judiciary Committee.
Rep. Faircloth served as House Chair of the Commission to Improve Community Safety and Sex Offender Accountability in 2004. Rep. Faircloth proposed, and saw passed into law, major improvements in the criminal law to protect children from child molesters. In 2005 Rep. Faircloth has organized the children’s caucus to focus attention how the state budget and policies affect children.
Rep. Faircloth was named Legislator of the Year 2003 for his advocacy for children and adults living with disabilities. Rep. Faircloth was named Legislator of the Year 2004 by the Maine Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics for his nationally recognized proposals addressing the issue of obesity
A University of Notre Dame graduate, Faircloth holds a law degree from the University of California Hastings College of the Law. He conceived the Maine Discovery Museum in downtown Bangor, and led the creation of this $4.5 million facility.
Rep. Faircloth has successfully initiated major pieces of innovative policy. He spearheaded the “Deadbeat Dad” child support law, suspending driver’s licenses of absent parents who fail to pay child support. This law became a national model. He also pioneered Healthy Start (a child abuse prevention program), adoption law reform, a law to combat child sex abuse, and successfully authored Maine's first law making child pornography possession illegal. He authored a first-in-the nation law to honor the intent of organ donors and help save lives by increasing organ donation.
Faircloth successfully championed Maine’s research and development tax credit. He has been a leading advocate for children’s mental health funding and has drafted first-in-the-nation legislation to address the obesity epidemic. He authored legislation to compile DNA data from juvenile offenders who have been adjudicated to commit major crimes, a database which helps hold responsible perpetrators of crimes and helps exonerate the innocent.
