Info | Shubha Sandill is a strategic leader with an interdisciplinary background in academia, business and grassroots activism with extensive board governance experience from a multitude of local, provincial and national civil society organizations. With a Ph.D in Geography and a second Masters in Globalization from McMaster University, she has been teaching at the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies at York University. Having started her academic journey as an urban geographer with a focus on economy & environment, her current research concentrates on global gender, economic & climate justice, and socio-legal & policy reforms through an intersectional framework. Shubha is an award winning academic, moderator, panelist and a regular presenter at international platforms such as Oxford Women’s Leadership Symposium in Oxford, UK and Women’s Forum for Economy & Society in Paris. Her research about law, equality and entrepreneurship, funded by Osgoode Hall Law School, has been widely published in journals such as the American Journal of Academic Perspectives and academic books. She has also contributed op-eds to the Canadian Institute for Research on Public Policy – Policy Options Journal.
Shubha has been just as active in grassroots advocacy through numerous non-profit Boards over the years. As a Board Director for Ontario Council for International Cooperation, she contributed to OCIC’s efforts in fostering multi-sectoral dialogue on Canada’s Feminist International Assistance & Civil Society Partnership Policies, and UN Agenda 2030: Sustainable Development Goals. During her time as a Board Director at Neighbour-to-Neighbour Hamilton, Shubha’s efforts were geared towards poverty alleviation through fundraising, strategic planning, partnership building, and public engagement to promote social change.
An avid advocate for advancing civic leadership, Shubha served as VP Fundraising for both Hamilton West-Ancaster-Dundas Federal & Provincial Liberal Associations for MP Filomena Tassi and former MPP Ted McMeekin. She ran many local campaigns and is the founding President of Hamilton Region Women’s Liberal Association, where she organized discussions on policy, youth engagement, mentorship and gender balance in politics. More recently, she served as the VP South Central for Ontario Women’s Liberal Commission, overseeing 17 Ontario ridings helping women navigate the pathways to politics. Through her various roles, most recently as National Board Director at Equal Voice Canada, Shubha has continued to dedicate her efforts towards making civic landscapes more inclusive, diverse and equitable, while bridging the gap between academia, legislature and politics for constructive reforms.
Having lived in the riding of Hamilton West-Ancaster-Dundas for nearly 30 years while raising her two daughters and running a number of family businesses within the Hamilton area, there are a core group of policy priorities and local issues that are close to Shubha’s heart. Some of these issues include healthcare, senior care, small business support, affordable housing and childcare, education recovery, and climate action.
While COVID-19 has laid bare many harsh realities for local residents and has also intensified existing inequities, Shubha aims to bring a fresh vision to this riding’s multifaceted development and represent the interests of all Hamilton West-Ancaster-Dundas constituents at Queen’s Park.
