Justice Barry Salman was born and has resided in Bronx County for most of his life. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Hunter College, City University of New York, and is a member of its Hall of Fame.
Justice Salman is a graduate of St. John’s University of Law School, June 1965, and was admitted to practice in the Appellate Division, First Department in December, 1965. He is admitted to the United States Supreme Court and the Federal Courts, Southern and Eastern Districts of New York.
Justice Salman served as a law secretary to Hon. Alvin Klein and served seven years as a member of the New York City Council representing part of Bronx County. He was elected to the Civil Court, in 1977, and reelected to Civil Court in 1987. In 1981, he was appointed an Acting Supreme Court Justice and served from 1981-85, Criminal Term, and 1985-90 Civil Term. In May 1990, he was appointed to the Supreme Court by Governor Mario Cuomo, and in November 1990, was elected to a full term. In 2004, he was reelected to the Supreme Court for a term ending 2018. In November 2005, he was appointed Administrative Judge 12th District, Civil Term, Bronx.
Justice Salman is a member of the Bronx County Bar Association, The Judicial Section of the New York State Bar Association and the New York State Trial Lawyers. He is President of the Supreme Court Justices Association of the City of New York (2005-2006) and a member of the Supreme Court Justices State Association. He is a founder of the Para Legal Program at Lehman College, City University of New York, where he has taught and serves as Chair of its Advisory Board. He is the former Director of the New York Division of the American Cancer Society and Chairman Emeritus of the Bronx Division.
He served in the U.S. Army and is presently a Major in the Armed Forces of the State of New York (The New York Guard).
He is married, has two married daughters and three granddaughters.
