Info | Conor Houston is the SDLP's Assembly candidate for Strangford.
Conor is a business owner, civic activist and lawyer who lives in Saintfield, Co Down.
A law graduate of Queen’s University Belfast, Conor started his career as a solicitor advocate representing clients to the Supreme Court of both the UK and Ireland and was involved in many high profile and pioneering cases. Through his time in practice as a lawyer, he experienced the challenge of being a post-conflict society, the concept of transitional justice and the need for human rights and social justice-based solutions.
Following a US State Department Program to Boston, Conor subsequently was appointed Programme Director at the Centre for Democracy & Peace Building. He worked on projects aimed at supporting the peace process in Northern Ireland and led a pioneering initiative ‘EU Debate NI’ – a civic participation program which engaged thousands of citizens in the importance of the UK Referendum on EU membership (Brexit).
Conor has been at the heart of civic society in its response to Brexit – articulating the need to protect the peace process and Good Friday Agreement. He has delivered briefings to both the UK and Irish Parliaments, to US politicians and to EU 27 Ambassadors.
He is a Director at Houston Solutions Ltd a bespoke leadership advisory company where has provided trusted strategic advice to senior leaders across business, government, digital and entertainment industries. He has experience in bringing large-scale impactful strategies to life and has built relationships and networks locally and internationally. Conor has a passion for supporting the small business economy in Northern Ireland and was the Policy Chair of the Federation of Small Business (FSB) in NI.
As a Governor of The Irish Times, Conor had the unique role acting as shareholder of this prestigious media organisation – upholding the values of democracy, free press and freedom of speech.
Conor is involved in conversations about constitutional change on the island of Ireland, both through his role on the New Ireland Commission and as Founder of his own civic initiative Connected Citizens. His work is focused on civic participation, shared values, agreement, mutual respect and reconciliation.
He is passionate about creating opportunities for young people. He was founder of Digital Futures giving young people access to the tech sector in NI. He has also acted as Chair of Fleming Fulton School where he saw a first-hand the challenges facing our education system, especially for children with special needs. He was a Director in ShoutOut an LGBTQ+ youth charity providing workshops in schools across the island of Ireland.
Conor wants to empower our young people to be active, global citizens as is Chair of One Young World Belfast 2023 when Northern Ireland will host the world’s largest global youth summit.
He has worked hard to develop strong links with the Irish diaspora, especially in the US. Conor is an Advisory Board member of Ireland Week in Los Angeles. He is a Fellow of the US State Department Rule of Law Programme, Fellow of the British Council Hammamet Conference and represented the UK at the Ship for World Young Leaders Conference in Japan. Conor was also the inaugural Chair of The Ireland Funds Belfast. He has delivered lectures in Harvard University, Loyola Marymount University LA, Trinity College Dublin and Ulster University.
