Info | Redstone operated a machine shop in Indianapolis IN during the Civil War. He designed the first military tank (which he called a "Land Monitor," and his sketch is shown here: [Link] .
Later, Redstone moved to California.
Redstone ran for the US House in 1886 as the Labor Party nominee. Although he won one percent of the vote, he challenged the result. Congress rejected his challenge due to his low percent of votes (Ottawa Weekly Republic, 1/19/1888).
Following his abortive political career, he squatted on land in the Sierra Forest. President Benjamin Harrison created the Sierra Forest Reserve in 1893, which included the land where Redstone had settled. Redstone had not claimed the land or filed a deed, so he in effect lost his property. Congress passed an act to help him, which Pres. McKinley vetoed in 1899.
