Info | (father of Sidney Emanuel Mudd [1885-1924]), a Representative from Maryland; born at �Gallant Green,� Charles County, Md., February 12, 1858; attended Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., and was graduated from St. John�s College, Annapolis, Md., in 1878; studied law privately and also attended the law department of the University of Virginia at Charlottesville; was admitted to the bar in 1880 and practiced; member of the State house of delegates in 1879 and 1881; successfully contested as a Republican the election of Barnes Compton to the Fifty-first Congress and served from March 20, 1890, to March 3, 1891; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1890 to the Fifty-second Congress; elected to the State house of delegates in 1895 and served as speaker; moved to La Plata in 1896; delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1896; elected to the Fifty-fifth and to the six succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1897-March 3, 1911); chairman, Committee on Expenditures in the Department of Justice (Sixtieth and Sixty-first Congresses); died in Philadelphia, Pa., October 21, 1911; interment in St. Ignatius� Catholic Church Cemetery, Chapel Point, near La Plata, Charles County, Md.
