Info | CEO of Hudson's Bay Company, former president of CVS
Helena is a mom of four, cancer survivor, and leader with the business and government experience needed to fix our public schools, make our state more affordable, and strengthen our economy. A proud Democrat, Helena is a fierce champion of a woman’s right to choose.
A lifelong Rhode Islander, Helena grew up in Providence as the oldest of five. In 1992 she joined Woonsocket, RI-based CVS, where she worked her way up for the next 25 years. She led teams that built the groundbreaking ExtraCare customer discount program and created digital programs to make prescription drugs more affordable. During her time at CVS, she helped the company grow into one of the largest in America by bringing teams together and innovating. Helena also became a trailblazer for women—breaking glass ceilings again and again, and consistently opening the door for women who followed her.
Helena’s commitment to public service is rooted in her lifelong work to improve healthcare for hundreds of thousands of people. In 2014 as President of Retail, Helena led CVS’s unprecedented decision to hold themselves accountable to their mission as a healthcare company and stop selling tobacco products. She also worked with the Obama administration to boost insurance enrollment after the passage of the Affordable Care Act, and later with the Raimondo administration to strengthen healthcare in Rhode Island.
Helena knows that Rhode Islanders want a governor who will work for them. She hears every day from Rhode Islanders who are worried about the impact COVID has had on their kids’ education, and who increasingly feel like they’re being priced out of our state. That’s why as governor, she will make historic investments in public education to solve COVID learning loss and make it more affordable to live in Rhode Island by lowering the costs of housing, prescription drugs, and childcare. Helena will work every day to create great career opportunities in high-growth industries. And unlike career politicians, Helena is fully committed to holding herself and her team accountable to Rhode Islanders.
