InfoLeading others to succeed against all odds

From the beginning Bob Pohl has been a committed leader who confronted challenges and triumphed. Growing up in Southern California and graduating from Notre Dame in 1971, he moved to Clarksdale, Mississippi—a town that was still segregated. There as he did working later for head start in East Los Angeles, Bob injected hope into a community and school mired by disadvantages, and led students to succeed beyond expectations.

Upon return to California, Bob became principal of a failing school in the Haight-Ashbury District of San Francisco. Not only was he the youngest principal in the city, at age 27, he was the most successful. Bob brought forth the leadership and belief in his students that turned the school around—yet another testament to his commitment and expertise in education and his ability to lead others to triumph against all odds.

Bob took a 12-year hiatus from education to work for CB Commercial Real Estate in Los Angeles. Achieving success quickly, Bob absorbed the importance that business and the economy play in building on a community’s potential.

10 years ago, Bob moved to Santa Barbara and became an educational consultant. This provided him with valuable experience as a small business owner. While running his business, Bob realized that he could help the community much the same way he helped students be successful. It wasn’t long before Bob was elected to the Santa Barbara Elementary School Board and later became the president.

Making the South Coast a better place for our families

While President of the Santa Barbara School Board, he enacted many visionary reforms that were implemented statewide. In the spirit of fiscal responsibility, Bob balanced the Board’s inflated budget and even set up a significant “rainy day” fund. He also led Santa Barbara elementary schools to institute tough standards and to develop innovative programs, such as the highly successful Santa Barbara Community Academy.

An expert in improving the quality of education, he is currently an educational consultant with his own company. He works with schools throughout the state of California and the nation to develop strategies to increase student performance.

Bob also serves as the Treasurer for Zona Seca; a member of the Museum of Art Education Committee; Hospice Volunteer, and Assistant Girls Softball Coach.

Finding the Door of Opportunity

Bob believes that education is the key to opportunity. With this in mind, he entered the 2002 race for State Assembly. While in the thick of a spirited campaign, Bob was diagnosed with cancer, subsequently ending his campaign.

Bob now has a clean bill of health and a renewed conviction to enhance life on the coast. His own experiences with the healthcare system offer acute insight into its troubling weaknesses. Now he is even more determined to bring about change in Sacramento.

Bob Pohl, a tested leader and dedicated reformer

In his quest for a stronger California, Bob envisions a more united and productive State Assembly by reaching across party lines and ending politics as usual. He has always been dedicated to the working class—striving to reform schools to give us a chance to succeed. His experience in the business community has also provided Bob with the understanding of how to create a stronger economy.

Bob Pohl, a tested leader and dedicated reformer, believes in providing the citizens of this state with the opportunity to realize their dreams. A superior understanding of education and financial security are crucial to empowering the people of California. He also believes in more localized decision making, so that each community can make the right decision for themselves. Bob’s everlasting optimism, unmatched experience, and commitment to success make him the best candidate for State Assembly.

Bob Pohl completed his undergraduate work at Notre Dame, and went on to earn his masters degree at USC. He later received his Doctorate in Education at Boston University.

Bob and his wife Susan Strong live in Santa Barbara with their two daughters, Olivia and Caitlin. Susan is the author of Greatness of Girls , a book for young women relaying the experiences of famous women while growing up, and a new book- The Boldness of Boys , which relays similar stories of young men.
