Info | A Representative from New York; born in Johnstown, Montgomery County, N.Y., August 21, 1784; attended the common schools; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1806 and commenced practice in Auburn, N.Y.; clerk of Cayuga County 1811-1815; elected as a Republican to the Fourteenth Congress and served from March 4, 1815, to June 4, 1816, when he resigned; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1816 to the Fifteenth Congress; circuit judge of New York 1823-1827; elected Lieutenant Governor of New York in 1828, and became Governor when Martin Van Buren was appointed Secretary of State of the United States March 12, 1829; elected Governor of New York and served from 1830 to 1833; naval officer of the port of New York 1833-1838; appointed Chargé d’Affaires to the Two Sicilies on February 6, 1838, and served until January 12, 1842; engaged in the management of his large estate and resided in Kalamazoo, Mich., 1847-1867; returned to his estate “Willowbrook,” near Auburn, Cayuga County, N.Y., and died there November 1, 1874; interment in St. Peter’s Churchyard, Auburn, N.Y.
