Info | Sean Connaughton is the youngest of six children of Eugene and Patricia Connaughton. Eugene served in the United States Navy during World War II and after the war embarked on a 32 year career as a police officer. In addition to raising their six children, Patricia was a public school teacher. She also served as a WAVE in the United States Navy during World War II. Sean's family lived on Long Island.
Sean graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science degree, a Third Mates (Unlimited Tonnage) Merchant Marine license, and a commission in the United States Coast Guard. He served on active duty in the United States Coast Guard from 1983 to 1986.
In 1984, Sean married the former Teresa Voda. They initially lived in the Mount Vernon area of Fairfax County, Virginia before moving to Prince William County, Virginia at the beginning of 1987.
After leaving active duty, Sean briefly worked for a defense contractor in Arlington, Virginia. He then returned to the Coast Guard as a civil servant in the Office of Marine Safety, Security, and Environmental Protection at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C. During this time, Sean attended Georgetown University on a part-time basis and graduated with a Masters degree in 1988.
In 1988, Sean began working at a trade association representing companies involved in the energy and marine transportation industries. He attended law school at night at George Mason University School of Law. Sean graduated with his law degree in 1992 and passed the Virginia State Bar later that year.
Sean embarked on a career as a lawyer in private practice specializing in maritime and international law. He and a colleague appeared before the United States Supreme Court in 1999 to argue a case involving the constitutionality of laws imposed on the marine transportation industry. They won that case in a unanimous decision. Sean has published many articles on marine transportation and environmental issues as well as spoken at numerous conferences and seminars on these topics. He joined the law firm of Troutman Sanders LLP at the end of 2000. He is a member of the Virginia Bar Association, the District of Columbia Bar Association, the Maritime Law Association, and the Veterans Pro Bono Consortium.
Sean was elected Chairman At-large of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors in November 1999. He was re-elected to a second four-year term, beginning January 1, 2004. He is: a member of the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority; chief of the Northern Virginia Workforce Investment Board; on the steering committee of the Large Urban County Caucus of the National Association of Counties; member of the Administration of Government Committee of the Virginia Association of Counties; and participates in the Transportation Planning Board of the Washington Metropolitan Region and the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission.
Sean currently resides in Triangle, Virginia, with his wife, Teresa, and their two children, Courtney and Sean, Jr. Teresa, is a nurse and volunteers at Courtney and Sean Jr.'s school. He and his family attend St. Francis of Assisi Church in Triangle. He is a member of the Prince William County Republican Committee, the National Conference of Republican County Officials, Prince William Regional Chamber of Commerce, Prince William-Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce, American Legion Post 28, Montclair Lions Club, the Optimist Club of Manassas, the Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Association, the Naval Reserve Association, the Reserve Officers Association, the Propeller Club of the United States, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He is on the Board of Directors of the Homeland Protection Institute, Ltd., and the Belmont Bay Science Center. He is also the Chairman of the Capital Campaign for the New Potomac Hospital. Sean is also Chairman of the 9/11 Memorial Fund. Sean was a fellow at the Sorenson Institute of Political Leadership in 1995.
Sean has remained a member of the United States Armed Forces. After serving on active duty in the United States Coast Guard, he joined the United States Naval Reserve as a selected reserve in 1987. Serving in both operational and staff billets, he currently is a Commander and eligible for retirement. Sean graduated (with honors) from the U.S. Naval War College in 1998.
In addition to attending his children's soccer/volleyball/basketball/baseball/softball games, Sean enjoys running and weightlifting. Sean also enjoys traveling, visiting every part of the Commonwealth, all 50 states, and over 40 foreign countries.
