| Info | Erich Jacoby-Hawkins was raised in the small town of Shelburne, Ontario. There he learned that a community can be small and walkable while still being livable and complete. Summers outdoors in the green spaces outside town, and at his grandparents farm, sparked an enduring love of the natural world.
Erich’s support of activist and social justice causes began as a teenager, when he became a Foster Parent (and has been ever since). Erich has also been a long-time member and/or contributor to Environmental Defense Canada, the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, and Amnesty International.
Erich studied Mathematics and Computer Science, then Anthropology, at the University of Waterloo, where he also took part in the cooperative learning program, working at 5 different corporations in between school terms. Erich became aware of the political process, and the major parties, both as the editor of the faculty student paper and as a student representative on several governing bodies.
Erich then spent 3 years teaching English conversation in South Korea, where he witnessed a number of different ways for a modern society to address problems of land, resource, economic, transportation, and social issues.
Upon returning to Canada, Erich and his wife Teresa settled in Barrie, where they both teach. Over the past 6 years, Erich has been involved with various activist and community groups addressing the environment, homelessness, and the arts. He also founded Barrie’s federal Green Party association which ran a very successful campaign in the 2004 election. Later that year, the Jacobys were blessed by the birth of their daughter, Brianna. Since the last election, Erich has been working with a team of engaged volunteers on building a lasting Green presence in the community.
Erich is glad to have this opportunity to again represent the Green Party to Barrie, and build upon the Green foundations which have grown over the past 2 years.
Erich holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Anthropology from the University of Waterloo. Additionally, he served with the University of Waterloo student government, Faculty of Mathematics, and was Editor of a student publication, MathNews.
His hobbies include organic gardening.
