Info | Former Justice Albert D. Schanzer, who retired from Special Sessions Court here in 1961, died Thursday in Nassau Hospital, Mineola, L. I., after a short illness. He was 80 years old and lived in East Williston, L. I.
Before his promotion to the Special Sessions bench in 1959 by Mayor Robert F. Wagner, Mr. Schanzer had served as a city magistrate since 1950. He was an Assemblyman from Brooklyn from 1930 to 1938, a City Councilman in 1938 -39, Borough Secretary of Brooklyn in 1940 and a member of the Appeals Board of the State Un employment Insurance Depart ment from 1941 to 1946.
A short earnest man, he had been for many years New York's bantamweight champion of the underdog, and had long battled for food, clothes and shelter for the unfortunate.
Mr. Schanzer was born Aug. 18, 1890, in Hungary, and was brought to the United States at the age of 8. An errand boy at 13, he attended night law school classes at New York Univer sity, from which he graduated cum laude in 1912. He was admitted to the bar the same year.
In World War I, he served as a sergeant of infantry.
As an Assemblyman, he spon sored mortgage moratorium leg islation during the Depression, and introduced a comprehensive bill for unemployment insur ance.
Long a leader in welfare and Jewish community activities, Mr. Schanzer was formerly president of the Brooklyn Jew ish Big Brother and Big Sister Association, the Brooklyn Fed eration of Jewish Charities and the Social Guild of Williams burg, which ran a settlement house there.
He was a founder of the Brooklyn Region of the Zionist Organization of America, for mer co-chairman of the Brook lyn division of the United Jewish Appeal, and former Brooklyn co-chairman of Israel Bond Sales. He was an honorary chairman of the Jewish National Fund.
Surviving are a son, Herbert; a daughter, Mrs. Harold Heffner, and five grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 1 P.M. tomorrow at the Jeffer Funeral Home, Hillside Avenue and 188th Street, Hollis, Queens.
