| Info | For two years, Julia Turnbull has been working to become the Liberal candidate for the riding of Calgary South Centre. Her hard work has paid off: she became the candidate on May 7, has thousands of supporters; has built a campaign team that’s the envy of even the most experienced politician; and, most of all, she’s winning over constituents who haven’t elected a Liberal candidate since 1968. Says The Globe and Mail’s columnist Roy McGregor: “They listen and they like her.”
An accomplished lawyer, Julia has handled thousands of cases and is a proven and trusted representative of Calgary citizens. A resident of the riding for 25 years, Julia has been a strong community supporter, lending skills to the United Way, Calgary Legal Guidance, and Volunteer Calgary as well as being a significant donor to Calgary’s theatre and AIDS organizations. Her community experiences, and work with Calgarians, has given her a strong sense of what you the voter want from their Member of Parliament.
In Titans (1988), Peter Newman refers to Julia as one of the three toughest divorce lawyers in Calgary. In l988, Julia founded her own law firm specializing in family law. As senior partner, Julia helped build the practice into one of Calgary's pre-eminent firms. Dedicated to representing the citizens of Calgary South Centre, Julia resigned from her law practice in 2002 to work full time on the campaign for the Liberal nomination.
In l991, Julia received the highest possible rating from her peers in the Martindale and Hubbell legal directory. There are no other family law lawyers in Calgary with an equivalent rating to this day. A year later, Julia was the first Alberta lawyer to be invited to join the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. In l996, the Lieutenant-Governor of Alberta appointed Julia a Queen’s Counsel. In 1997, she was named president of the Calgary Bar Association, only the second woman in its nearly one hundred-year history.
Julia is married to Greg Turnbull, a prominent securities lawyer, and together they have three children.
