Info | Beaumont lumberman who became a millionaire in the 1890s
Philanthropist; gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to Baylor University, to Baptist congregations in Texas, and the YMCA. Baylor's science building was named for him.
Carroll was briefly active in the Prohibition Party, first as the nominee for Governor of Texas and then as the nominee for US Vice President. He was supposed to attend the Prohibition National Convention in 1904 but was prevented at the last minute, and the convention nominated him for VP.
In his later years, Carroll's investments dried up, and he died a pauper. A former Governor of Texas was among the hundreds who attended his funeral.
