InfoDAVENPORT, Frederick Morgan, a Representative from New York; born in Salem, Essex County, Mass., August 27, 1866; attended the public schools; moved with his parents to Pennsylvania in 1874 and settled in New Milford; moved to Yonkers, N.Y., in 1893; was graduated from Wesleyan University, Middletown, Conn., in 1889 and from Columbia University, New York City, in 1905; member of the faculty of political science of Hamilton College, Clinton, N.Y., 1904-1929; served in the State senate 1909-1911; unsuccessful Progressive candidate for Lieutenant Governor of New York in 1912 and for Governor in 1914; again a member of the State senate 1919-1925; chairman of the New York State Legislative Committee on Taxation and Retrenchment 1919-1925; delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1924; elected as a Republican to the Sixty-ninth and to the three succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1925-March 3, 1933); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1932 to the Seventy-third Congress and for election in 1934 to the Seventy-fourth Congress; president of the National Institute of Public Affairs, Washington, D.C., 1934-1949; chairman of the Federal Personnel Council, Washington, D.C., from 1939 until his retirement in 1953; died in Washington, D.C., December 26, 1956; interment in Woodlawn Cemetery, New York City.
