Vice Admiral Lee Gunn

Vice Admiral Lee Gunn is from Bakersfield, California and is a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles. He received his commission from the Naval ROTC program at UCLA in June, 1965.

Vice Admiral Gunn served in USS EVERETT F. LARSON (DD 830) as First Lieutenant, Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer and Navigator. After attending Destroyer School, he served as Operations Officer in USS O'BRIEN (DD 725). He was Executive Officer of USS ALBERT DAVID (FF 1050) and commanded USS BARBEY (FF 1088). Following command, he was assigned as Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations, Plans, Training and Readiness on the staff of Commander, Naval Surface Combatant Task Force, and Commander Logistics Force, Seventh Fleet. He also commanded Destroyer Squadron Thirty-one, Navy's Anti-Submarine Warfare tactical, and test and evaluation Destroyer Squadron.

Vice Admiral Gunn is a graduate of the U. S. Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey (Master of Science, Operations Research and Systems Analysis), the National War College, the Senior Officer Ship Material Readiness Course and the CAPSTONE Joint Flag Officer Course. Vice Admiral Gunn was Aide and Flag Lieutenant to Commander Naval Surface Force, U. S. Pacific Fleet. He also served in eight billets at various times over the years in the manpower, personnel and training area, in the Bureau of Naval Personnel and on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations.

Vice Admiral Gunn directed the yearlong Ship Operational Characteristics Study. This 1987 -1988 study developed, and recommended to the Chief of Naval Operations, the essential capabilities and characteristics to be embodied in surface combatant ships of the 21st century. The study continues, to some extent, to guide the design and development of combatant ships to this day.

Vice Admiral Gunn most recently served at sea as Commander, Amphibious Group Three and, during January through March, 1995, as Commander, Combined Naval Forces, and Deputy Commander, Combined Task Force United Shield. CTF United Shield conducted the combat amphibious withdrawal of United Nations (UNISOM II) forces from Somalia.

Vice Admiral Gunn concluded his active duty Navy career in August, 2000, following more than three years of service as the Inspector General of the Department of the Navy.

Vice Admiral Gunn's personal awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, six Legions of Merit, two Meritorious Service Medals, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (Combat V), and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, in addition to various campaign and service ribbons.
