Info | Born in Stratford CT; sources give various dates of birth including 1808 and 1816.
Moved to New York City in 1832, where he worked as secretary of the Board of Trade and became a successful merchant.
As colonel of the militia, he quelled a mob attack on banks in NYC.
In 1852, Curtis was mentioned as a potential Democratic candidate for governor (New York Herald, 3/25/1852).
He served in the Union Army during the Civil War, and afterwards he entered the mining industry. He served as president of the Franklinite Steel and Zinc Company of New Jersey.
After his presidential campaign, Curtis purchased large tracts of land in Texas for a project that never materialized (Baltimore Sun, 11/13/1903).
