Info | Entrepreneur and Businessman
Named an Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year for 2000, Jared Polis is a businessman and political activist who has founded, funded, and/or run several high-tech start-ups including Bluemountain.com, American Information Systems, Inc., Proflowers.com, and Dan's Chocolates. From 1996 to 1999, Jared served as CEO of Bluemountain.com, the most popular electronic greeting card site on the Internet, and led its business development team until the company was sold to Excite@Home in fall of 1999.
Jared Polis graduated from Princeton University with a degree in political science, but his experiences in the private and public sector span back almost two decades. In 1993, while at Princeton, Jared co-founded American Information Systems, Inc. (ais.net), a Chicago-based network implementation and Internet software development company that was sold to Exodus Communications in 1998. While still in high school, Jared began to build the groundwork for a highly successful career by buying surplus scrap metal from the United States Department of Defense and selling it to mills. At the age of 17, he spent the summer in Moscow trading privatization vouchers on the Russian Commodities Exchange, and spent several days as the only non-Russian on the floor.
Jared's political experience similarly dates back to his earliest days. As a summer intern for Senator Tom Daschle, Jared worked in Washington, D.C. learning about the governmental process. Jared also helped out with numerous political campaigns and served as a regional campaign manager for Gray Davis in his bid for the United States Senate in 1991 and 1992.
A member of the Colorado chapter of the Young Entrepreneurs Organization and named one of the top ten young entrepreneurs by Success Magazine, Jared continues to explore new frontiers in the business world, particularly in creating new efficiencies for consumers through technology. In 2000, Jared ran for and was elected to the At-large seat on the Colorado State Board of Education. Two years later he became Vice-Chair, and in 2004, Jared was named Chairman of the Colorado State Board of Education, a position he continues to hold. Jared feels strongly about the need to improve the quality of Colorado schools, and was instrumental in getting Amendment 23 on the ballot, which passed in November of 2000. During his tenure, Jared will focus on recruiting and retaining quality teachers, improving technology in education, and working closer with local school districts.
When he's not working, Jared is fond of softball, tennis, walking his dog, reading and getting the most he can out of life.
