Info | Senator Charles practices law as a partner of the Newark law firm of Ashley and Charles. He graduated from Rutgers University in 1965, and from Rutgers Law School in 1969, the year of his admission to the Bar. A lifelong resident of Jersey City, Senator Charles attended School 22 and Lincoln High School.
Prior to his election to the Senate, Joseph Charles, Jr. served ten terms in the Assembly. Over many of these terms, he also Chaired the Legislature's Black and Latino Caucus, which conducted exhaustive hearings and proposed ground-breaking reforms to combat racial profiling in New Jersey. While in the Assembly, Mr. Charles held numerous other positions of leadership, including Minority Leader Pro Tempore.
Senator Charles has also championed the causes of affordable housing, property tax relief, civil rights, and crime victim rights.
