Info | MARTIN, Thomas Ellsworth, a Representative and a Senator from Iowa; born in Melrose, Monroe County, Iowa, January 18, 1893; attended the public schools; graduated from the State University of Iowa in 1916 and from its law college in 1927; graduated from Columbia University graduate school in 1928; sales analyst and accountant for a rubber company in Akron, Ohio, and Dallas, Tex., in 1916 and 1917; during the First World War served as a first lieutenant with the Thirty-fifth Infantry, United States Army 1917-1919; continued work in the rubber industry; assistant professor of military science and tactics, University of Iowa, 1921-1923; accountant; admitted to the Iowa bar in 1927 and commenced practice in Iowa City; city solicitor for Iowa City 1933-1935; mayor of Iowa City 1935-1937; elected as a Republican to the Seventy-sixth and to the seven succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1939-January 3, 1955); was not a candidate for renomination in 1954; elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in 1954, and served from January 3, 1955, to January 3, 1961; was not a candidate for renomination; retired and moved to Seattle, Wash., where he died June 27, 1971; interment in Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, Oreg.
