Info | Roy McDonald is a native of the Lansingburgh section of Troy, New York. He graduated from the Lansingburgh Public School System and received his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from the State University of New York at Oneonta, New York.
Roy has served as the Town and County Supervisor of Wilton in Saratoga County since 1979. As town supervisor, Roy totally eliminated local town property taxes (both General and Highway Funds) for the past 19 years while posting consecutive budget surpluses. Roy also has aggressively promoted economic development, and his efforts have led to the creation of more than 4,000 new, private-sector jobs.
Roy McDonald counts the following as some of his successes as town supervisor: Special Economic Development Fund of $2 million; Matching Town and County Grant Program; Buy Saratoga Campaign; Employ and Train Saratoga Program; Gavin Town Complex; Wilton Wildlife Preserve; affordable housing facility for veterans; and construction of a senior citizen facility.
Professionally, Roy is a Vice-President and public finance investment banker for Paine Webber’s Municipal Securities Group. Through his career, Roy has developed a unique understanding of the economy of New York State. Roy is proud of his career journey, which began over 30 years ago as a laborer in the same local steel mill that employed his father.
Roy McDonald served in the Vietnam War as an Artillery Forward Observer for the U.S. Army’s First Cavalry Division. He participated in several combat assaults on the South Vietnam-Cambodian border as well as in Cambodia.
Roy is currently serving as a member on the Saratoga VFW, Saratoga/Wilton Elks, Saratoga American Legion, Vietnam Veterans of America, SUNY-Oneonta President’s Advisory Committee, Saratoga Economic Development Corporation and Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce. Roy has served as past director of the Saratoga County Cancer Society and Saratoga County Red Cross. A member of the Hudson Valley Community College’s Foundation Board of Directors. He had received distinguished alumni awards from both SUNY Oneonta and Hudson Valley Community College.
In recognition of his leadership and hard work, Roy has received many awards including Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award from the Wilton Grange. Distinguished Service Award from the Saratoga Vietnam Veterans of America and Distinguished Service Award from the Saratoga County ARC.
He currently serves as the Ranking Minority Member on the Assembly Local Governments Committee, and sits on the Committees on Aging, Agriculture, and Economic Development, Job Creation, Commerce and Industry.
Roy and his wife, Angela, are the proud parents of three daughters, Stephanie, Jessica, Julie Veitch, and grandson Jacob McDonald Veitch.
