Info | Robert G. "Bob" Prentiss, represents the people of the 109th Assembly District in his fifth term in the New York State Legislature. His Assembly District is comprised of the towns of Colonie (Albany County), Clifton Park and Halfmoon (Saratoga County). Mr. Prentiss has proudly served in elective public office for more than 33 years.
Assemblyman Prentiss works as a full-time legislator. He is the Ranking Member of the Assembly Committee on Economic Development, Job Creation and Commerce and Industry. He also serves on the Higher Education and Veterans� Affairs Committees.
Elected to the Assembly in 1994 and re-elected in 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2002, Mr. Prentiss has dedicated his life to public service. He formerly served 19 years as an Albany County Legislator, including two years as Minority Leader and four years as Deputy. Before moving to Colonie, he served as a City Councilman-at-large from 1965 to 1969 in his home town of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, where he was born March 23, 1936.
During the Korean War, Mr. Prentiss, at the young age of 17, enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served his country for three years, half of which he spent in Korea. Mr. Prentiss is proud of the fact that his first degree was from the "University of Hard Knocks." He holds lifetime memberships in the Colonie Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8692, the Capt. William Dale O�Brien Detachment of the Marine Corps League, and American Legion Post 1450 in Halfmoon. He also belongs to Catholic War Veterans Post 1181, AMVETS Post 50, and the Korean War Veterans Association.
Thanks to the G.I. Bill of Rights, Assemblyman Prentiss was able to attend college. In 1959 he graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Government, finishing the 4-year course requirements in only 21/2 -years. He earned his Master of Arts Degree in Journalism from the State University of Iowa where he held a Teaching Assistantship. He is certified to teach English and Social Studies at the secondary school level in both New York State and Massachusetts. Except for a dissertation, Mr. Prentiss has completed the academic requirements for a Doctoral Degree in Higher Education Administration from the University of Albany, New York.
Mr. Prentiss brings to the Assembly extensive professional and business experience both in the public and private sectors. He started his career in journalism as a newspaper reporter for the Berkshire Eagle (Pittsfield, Mass.) and later became a news editor for the Springfield Union (Mass.). Mr. Prentiss later became a faculty member at Ohio State University, teaching journalism full-time. He was the Director of Public Relations at MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois, and became the Public Relations Officer for the Massachusetts Department of Public Works.
In New York State, Mr. Prentiss began his career in public service as a Public Information Specialist with the State Commerce Department in 1965. He later became Personnel Administrator for the Narcotic Addiction Control Commission and also Assistant Public Relations Officer for the State University of New York Central Administration. He also maintained an active membership in his CSEA unit.
From 1969 to 1975, Mr. Prentiss served as Public Relations Director and Legislative Assistant specializing in the education field on the staff of former Speaker of the New York State Assembly Perry Duryea. He later became the Director of Public Relations for St. Peter�s Hospital in Albany.
For 25 years, Mr. Prentiss has been a businessman in the private sector. He owns and operates Prentiss Personnel Services in Colonie which he founded with his wife, Marlene, in 1979. She manages the job placement business so that Bob can serve in the Assembly, representing his constituents on a full-time basis. Marlene also serves as an Albany County Legislator (24th E.D. - Colonie), having been elected in 1999. They have two children, Lisa and Roger, and two grandsons, Donnie, 11 years old and Anthony, 2.
Assemblyman Prentiss is the Past Lieutenant Governor of the Capital Division, New York State Kiwanis, past Member of the Board of Directors of both the Northeastern New York Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation and the Albany County Unit of the American Cancer Society, past Treasurer of the Personnel Consultants Association of the Capital Region, and was on the Town of Colonie Centennial Commission. He currently is a Charter Member on both the Board of Directors of the We the People Foundation for Constitutional Education, Inc. and the Property Rights Foundation of America, Inc. He also sings bass in the Choir of Our Lady of Mercy Church.
Mr. Prentiss is also a member of the Colonie-Albany Regional and Greater Latham Chambers of Commerce, The Association for the Protection of the Adirondacks, Shaker Heritage Society, Retired Public Employees Association, Inc., Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Colonie Lodge 2192, Fuller Road & West Albany Volunteer Fire Departments, and Kelly-Morgan Independent Conservative Association. He is a lifetime member of the University of Massachusetts Alumni Association and is an honorary lifetime member of the S.W. Pitts Hose Company of Latham New York, Inc. founded in 1910 and the oldest volunteer company in Colonie.
