InfoMairead is a native of Ardee Co. Louth, from a strong Fine Gael family. Married to Tom Duff, they have four children, twins Orlaith and James aged 10, Aine aged 7 and Cathal aged 3. The family live near Drumconrath in Co. Meath.

Mairead was educated locally at Convent of Mercy N.S. Ardee and Ardee Community School. She studied agricultural economics at UCD, the first woman to qualify in the discipline. She is remembered from her very lively contributions to the student Ag Soc, especially in her capacity as a imaginative and creative recording secretary.

She began her career in journalism with RTE immediately after college. She worked initially as a radio producer and later in research on the Late Late Show. In recent times Mairead is well known as the presenter and key driving force behind the highly successful Ear to the Ground TV series, which has just completed its 11th season.

In print journalism she is the highly respected editor of the Farming Independent for the past seven years. Leading a strong team she has positioned this paper as the major independent voice in the agricultural sector.

Mairead served two terms as Chairperson of the Guild of Agricultural Journalists and successfully developed the guild as an important network for those in food and farming communications.

Mairead is currently chairperson of the Consumer Liaison Panel set up by the Minister for Agriculture and Food. This panel has spearheaded important changes in food labelling and traceability. The panel has just completed market research on consumer food issues, which is currently with the EU Commission and will be incorporated into EU policy and practice.
