InfoFAMILY
My wife Michelle and I have two children, Megan and Ben. An important value I want to instill in my children is that something is not working, they have the power to fix the problem, not simply complain.

In my free time, I like to bike on Shoreview's great trail system, sometimes with my daughter Megan or son Ben in tow. I am also an amateur genealogist and can be found researching my family history on the web.

RESUME
Currently I am the Executive Director of the Recycling Association of Minnesota (RAM), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

I graduated in 1990 from Grinnell College with a B.A. in history. I also hold a Masters of Public Affairs with a concentration in public and nonprofit management from the University of Minnesota's Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs. In the Fall of 1989, I studied in the Russian language department at the Moscow Energy Institute. The experience changed my life and renewed my faith that we live in a great nation.

COMMUNITY
In our community, I recently chaired the Shoreview Environmental Quality Committee and set up recycling programs at the Slice of Shoreview and at the Shoreview YMCA.

I believe strongly in getting people to participate in their local communities, instead of just talking around a committee table every month.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT
I represent the Recycling Association of Minnesota at the Capitol.

By demonstrating to legislators the economic benefits of recycling and by showing how recycling saves taxpayers money in the long term, I helped to reverse the Governor's proposed 20 percent cut to county recycling funding to less than one percent.

In this effort, our organization pulled together people with many different views, including local governments, Minnesota manufacturers, and organized labor.

HONORS
The Recycling Association of Minnesota and I have received several honors in recent years.

The City of Shoreview awarded me its Good Neighbor Award in 2002 for setting up the Slice of Shoreview's recycling program.

After a national survey of recyclers nationwide in 2002, Resource Recycling magazine named RAM's web site (which I design) one of eight national "Readers Choices." It was the only nonprofit web site on the list.

Resource Recycling magazine named me as one of seven "up-and-comers" in the recycling industry in the Fall of 2001.

The same journal recognized RAM in May 2000 as one of the top state recycling associations in the U.S. for a "deliberate, broad-based approach" to formulating policy and for cost-effectiveness.

Anoka County awarded RAM its Special Media Award for RAM's Recycling Works for Minnesota video in May 2003 and for RAM's member e-mail updates in May 2004.
