InfoA 10th generation, what is now West Virginia, native, Jesse Johnson, attended Marshall University, North Carolina School of the Arts, University of Charleston, and West Liberty University. Growing up in an atmosphere of public servants, Jesse’s father was a 25 year Charleston Police Detective retired veteran and WW II Veteran. His brother, Jess, also a 26 year veteran of law enforcement as a Kanawha County Deputy Sheriff, as well as a Vietnam veteran, along with West Virginia public school educators on his maternal family side. Jesse was a volunteer fire fighter, paramedic and first responder from his teen years. He was instrumental in starting the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority, riding on its first historic launch in 1977.

Currently, Jesse works as a Lobbyist, Freelance Writer and Lecturer on Political and Environmental issues, such as his opposition to Mountain Top Removal and multinational corporation abuse of communities and their health. Jesse rallies behind his message asking, “Sick enough yet of having only a two corporate political party power system that is robbing you, your children and grandchildren of their future?”…Ignoring the Constitution, Wall Street bailouts, wars for profit, prisons for profit, selling your private banking and medical information, health care sellouts to pharmaceutical and insurance lobbies, private corporate armies, domestic spying, privatization and poisoning of our water sources…

In 2004, Johnson was elected as the first Mountain Party nominee for Governor in order to maintain the newly-won ballot line and to bring the issue of Mountain Top Removal to statewide attention. Despite having no corporate financial support, he received 18,430 votes (2.48%). In 2006, again to fight for the public financing of our elections, he was nominated for a seat in the US Senate. Johnson received 1.9% of the vote, running against favored Senator Byrd. Also to his credit as CEO of WV film Investment, he foraged the film industry in West Virginia to created jobs and increase tourism; and implemented two pieces of Intellectual Property Legislation.

In 2007, seeking to bring national attention to Mountain Top Removal, Johnson presided as state chair over the Mountain Party and its affiliation with the national Green Party. During this time, Johnson was solicited by members of the Green Party to run for its nomination for President. He received the endorsement of former Alaskan US Senator and 2008 Democratic presidential candidate Mike Gravel. While Johnson failed to secure the nomination, he succeeded in focusing attention on the environmental concerns of Mountain Top Removal occurring in his state.

In 2008, he was once again nominated for Governor by his party. At this time his campaign was endorsed by the Sierra Club making history as being the only third party nominee endorsed in the 116 years of existence. Johnson was also endorsed by the West Virginia Citizens Action Committee. During this 2008 West Virginia gubernatorial campaign he received over 31,000 votes giving him 4.48% voter support. The 2nd highest in West Virginia history and highest in 96 years.

In 2009, Johnson was honored to present at the Eastern Economic Association Annual Conference in New York City, the world’s largest conference of its kind.

Johnson was a member of the Screen Actors Guild, Actor's Equity, AFTRA, SAG's Native American Registry and has worked with both the Directors Guild of America and the Writers Guild of America. He is also the only West Virginia US Senate candidate to be a Union card carrying member. He held the first ever Tri Partisan event (Presents Day Rally for Public Workers) which birthed the U.E. Local 170, one of the nation’s fastest growing union locals.
