Info | Mike Moore began his twenty-five year career in public service as an assistant district attorney in 1977. He was then elected as the state?s youngest District Attorney in 1979. First elected as Attorney General in 1987 and now in his fourth term, Mike Moore has never been afraid to fight for what he believes to be right.
In 1994 he received national attention when he filed the first suit against thirteen tobacco companies, making Mississippi the first state to insist that cigarette manufacturers reimburse the state for costs it incurred treating smoking related illnesses. The suit resulted in a $4.1 billion settlement for the State of Mississippi which has been placed in a Health Care Trust Fund and will be used to improve the health of the citizens of Mississippi. Following Mississippi?s lead, a $240 billion settlement was reached that covered all of the states. He is Chairman of the Partnership for a Healthy Mississippi, Mississippi's tobacco prevention program. Since its inception, the Partnership for a Healthy Mississippi, which is charged with combating tobacco use among our state?s young people, has seen a 30% reduction in teen smoking rates.
In recent years, Mike Moore has turned his attention to helping young people in our state with after school and mentoring programs. With the help of the Mississippi Legislature and Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Attorney General Moore has doubled the number of Boys and Girls Clubs in our state from 36 to over 72. Moore has also recruited more than 5,000 mentors for young people in our state with help from the business, religious, and education communities through the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Mississippi program and the Mississippi Mentoring Network which he created.
In 1992, Mike Moore became the first resident Mississippian to be selected as one of the Ten Most Outstanding Young Americans by the National Jaycees. Recognized by his peers as a leader, in 1994 his fellow Attorneys General bestowed upon him the prestigious Wyman Award, naming him the most outstanding attorney general in the nation. Mike Moore also served as president of the National Association of Attorneys General. For his work and leadership in pursuing the unprecedented lawsuit against the tobacco industry, the National Law Journal named him "Lawyer of the Year," followed by Governing Magazine naming him "Public Official of the Year" in 1998.
Mike and his wife, Tisha, have one son, Kyle, age 15.
