Info | Vic Marotta has served in various offices from the 1980's all the way into 2016. He served on the Vernon Township Committee in the 1980s. While serving on the Committee he was among the people spearheading an effort against Governor Tom Kean, Sr.'s plan to move waste from Essex to Vernon. The plan failed. He was then elected to the Sussex County Board of Chosen Freeholders in 1987 over democrat Maureen Sweeney, a fellow member of the Vernon Township Committee. He was sworn in on January 1, 1988. Marotta opted to run for a seconed term and finished his term in 1991. A 2010 referendum changed Vernon's form of Government to the Faulkner-Act form of Government. The first election for Mayor of Vernon was held in May 2011. Marotta ran and won beating Councilman Harry Shortway by 75 votes. He was sworn in as Mayor in July 2012. He continued to serve as Mayor until January 2016, when he lost re-election to Shortway who successfully made a comeback. Shortway beat Marotta 49% to 42% winning by a narrow 339 votes. In 2017 he launched a bid for Township Council. He came in sixth place.
