Info | In November 2003, Council Member James F. Gennaro was re-elected in a landslide victory to a second term as the representative for the 24th Council District located in Queens.
Gennaro has quickly established himself as one of the New York City Council's most thoughtful and effective legislators, bringing over twenty years of public service and city government experience to the job.
He has received accolades for his work as Chairman of the Council's Committee on Environmental Protection and is the leader of the Council's progressive environmental agenda. Gennaro has championed legislation that enhances water quality by punishing polluters (Local Law 27 of 2003), improves our air quality by reducing diesel emissions (Local Law 77 of 2003) and protects city residents and emergency personnel from the hazards of toxic chemicals (Local Law 76 & 82 of 2003).
He has also taken on the New York City Water Board to fight for lower water rates. In 2003, in an unprecedented victory, Gennaro successfully challenged the board's proposed rate increase and saved city residents millions of dollars.
Since taking office in January 2002, Gennaro has been a relentless advocate for the 24th Council District. Despite the toughest budget times in a generation, he has funded a major capital project in every public school in his district. In addition, he has funded over 100 youth, senior and other community-based programs and initiatives. Most of all, he takes pride in being "one-stop shopping" for the thousands of constituents from every corner of the district who come to his office for help.
Before being elected to the Council, Gennaro served as a Senior Policy Advisor to former New York City Council Speaker Peter Vallone, and as an adjunct professor of political science and environmental public policy at Queens College. He also served as President of the Jamaica Estates Association and as a member of Queens Community Board 8.
Gennaro lives with his wife, Joanne, and their two children in Jamaica Estates.
