| Info | Bill de Blasio has dedicated his career to standing up for New Yorkers and delivering results for our city. As a leader in the community and the City Council, Bill is a dedicated advocate for the people, keeping government accountable and defending our right to full participation in the democratic process. Whether advocating for parents and children as a School Board member, managing Hillary Rodham Clinton's successful U.S. Senate run in 2000, exercising tough oversight over child welfare services as the General Welfare committee chairman, or leading the effort to oppose Mayor Bloomberg's term limits law, Bill will take on the tough fights to protect the priorities of New Yorkers.
This fall, in response to the Mayor's effort to extend term limits without a voter referendum, Bill organized a large and diverse coalition to stand firmly in opposition to the Mayor's move. Bill's coalition, which not only held together but constantly grew, represented the will of a disenfranchised people who deserve a say in their city's future. Though we did not ultimately win the vote on term limits, together we proved that New Yorkers really can take on the Mayor, and will not let the government circumvent the public.
Throughout his years as a School Board Member and later as a Councilmember, Bill has fought effectively to keep education and child care at the top of the agenda. With two children enrolled in New York City's public schools, Bill and his wife Chirlane know the anxiety all parents face about keeping their children safe and ensuring they have access to affordable child care and quality public schools. While on the School Board, Bill led District 15 to become a pioneer in establishing Universal Pre-Kindergarten and capping first grade class size at 20 students. Bill has continued to champion education in the Council time and time again. In spring 2008, Bill organized a successful coalition of elected officials, parents, children, and advocates to win back millions in critical classroom funding cuts. Since taking office in 2002, Bill has won approximately $84 million in additional child care resources, sponsored multiple initiatives to expand child care for low and moderate income families, and organized communities to save child care centers that the city threatened to close.
As the Chair of the Council's General Welfare Committee, no one has worked harder than Bill to protect New York City's most vulnerable populations. In the wake of the death of Nixzmary Brown in 2006, Bill worked tirelessly to reform the City's overburdened and under-funded child welfare system. Through aggressive oversight, Bill helped institute changes that allow the Administration for Children's Services to better protect our city's children. In the Council, Bill authored and passed laws to increase housing access for low-income New Yorkers and protect domestic violence survivors' right to shelter. In his role as General Welfare Chair, Bill helped secure the passage of legislation amending the New York City Human Rights Law to grant domestic partners equal access to the same City benefits that married people enjoy, and as well as legislation that protects New Yorkers from discrimination based on partnership status.
In the City Council Bill has been a leader in protecting the environment for future generations of New Yorkers to enjoy. In 2008, the Council passed Bill's landmark electronics recycling legislation that requires manufacturers of electronics to collect and recycle their products, which contain hazardous materials. Bill has also authored legislation that would ban Styrofoam, as well as bills to increase recycling in schools. In addition, Bill has worked to keep our neighborhoods livable at the local level by stopping out-of-control and out-of-character development, keeping our community clean and ensuring support for vital community based organizations.
Bill's initial introduction to New York City government came during the 1989 Dinkins Mayoral campaign. Following the campaign, Bill served as an aide in the Dinkins Administration, where he eventually met his wife, Chirlane McCray. In 1996, Bill was tapped to run the Clinton-Gore campaign in New York, and then later served as the Regional Director for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in the Clinton Administration. In 1999, Bill was elected to serve on the School Board for District 15, and in 2000, Bill managed the campaign for Hillary Rodham Clinton's successful U.S. Senate bid. The following year, Bill was elected to the City Council and was re-elected overwhelmingly in 2003 and 2005. Bill holds a Bachelors Degree from New York University and a Masters in International and Public Affairs from Columbia University.
Bill and Chirlane live with their two children, Chiara and Dante, on 11th Street in Park Slope. Both children attend New York City public schools.

I mean we all know that being mayor of NYC just destroys people psychologically, so I can't say I'm overly surprised. Though at least this is comparatively harmless in the grand scheme of things
