Info | Minouche Shafik (a/k/a, Nemat Talaat Shafik; also honored as Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth on June 2015) is Director of the London School of Economics and Political Science, assuming the position on September 1, 2017. Dame Shafik is a major candidate to lead the World Bank in 2019.
Dame Shafik left her birthplace (Alexandria, Egypt) at age four and was raised in the United States, where she completed a BA at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. After picking up graduate degrees in economics at the London School of Economics and Oxford, Dame Shafik joined the World Bank in 1989. She eventually became its youngest Vice President, at age 36.
After a few academic stints at the Wharton and Georgetown Universities, Dame Shafik took a position as Permanent Secretary of the Department for International Development (from March 2008 to March 2011) and then as Deputy Managing Director of the IMF (from April 2011 to March 2014), resigning to later assume the position of Deputy Governor of the Bank of England on August 1, 2014.
