Info | Joan Ericksen Lancaster was one of the seven justices of the Minnesota Supreme Court, Minnesotas highest appellate court. She was appointed to that court in September of 1998, and elected by popular vote in November, 2000. The court has supervisory authority over the states trial courts and hears direct appeals in first degree murder, tax, and workers compensation matters, and appeals on petition from the Minnesota Court of Appeals, Minnesotas intermediate appellate court. In addition to deciding hundreds of cases, and thousands of petitions for further review, Justice Lancaster has been active in the courts supervisory work, including chairing the Supreme Court civil appellate rules committee and court interpreter advisory committee. Her administrative work on the court has focused on the needs of children. For example, she has chaired the Supreme Court child protection rules committee, been liaison to the juvenile rules committee, and chaired a supreme court task force on juvenile delinquency.
For Justice Lancaster - herself a mother of two - the focus on childrens issues grows naturally out of her experience immediately prior to her appointment to the Supreme Court. From 1995 through 1998 she was a judge of the Fourth Judicial District, Minnesotas busiest urban court, having been first appointed and then elected. There, in addition to handling serious felony trials, she served two years on specialty assignment to the districts juvenile court, hearing cases involving child protection and juvenile delinquency issues. While working in juvenile court she observed the devastating effects of alcohol in the lives of children and helped to organize, and then co-chaired, a state-wide task force on fetal alcohol syndrome.
Before becoming a judge, Justice Lancaster was an experienced and accomplished trial and appellate lawyer. Following two years in private practice immediately following her graduation from law school, she was an assistant United States attorney for the District of Minnesota for 10 years, and then was a partner in the Minneapolis law firm of Leonard, Street and Deinard, until her appointment to the Hennepin County bench. She has tried dozens of jury and court trials, and has argued and briefed many cases to the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. She has taught trial practice at the University of Minnesota Law School and trial, appellate, and evidence skills at numerous CLE courses.
Justice Lancaster is a Master in St. Paul, Minnesotas Inn of Court and sits on the boards of the University of Minnesota Law School Alumni Association, the Minnesota State Bar Association CLE Board, and the Minnesota Lawyer publication. She has been on the board of directors of the Federal Bar Association, and a member of the Minnesota Supreme Court Board of Law Examiners. She is the recipient of the 2002 Distinguished Service Award from the William Mitchell College of Law, a 1988 Special Achievement Award from the United States Department of Justice, Distinguished Alumni recognition from the University of Minnesota Law School, and Distinguished Alumni Award from Northfield Senior High School. She grew up outside of Northfield, Minnesota and attended St. Olaf College, the University of Minnesota Law School, and Oxford University, graduating with honors from each.
