Info | Council Member Peter F. Vallone Jr. is the Chairman of the Public Safety Committee of the New York City Council. He also serves as a member of the Environmental, Governmental Operations, Oversight and Investigations, and Standards and Ethics Committees.
As an Assistant District Attorney with the Manhattan District Attorney's office for over six years, Peter Vallone Jr. successfully prosecuted various street crime matters and compiled an impressive trial record of 40 top count convictions against 1 acquittal. As a highly respected expert in criminal law matters, Peter Vallone Jr. appears regularly on Court TV.
As Pro Bono Counsel to C.H.O.K.E. (Coalition Helping Organize a Kleaner Environment), Vallone Jr. led the fight against the proliferation of power plants in our community and represented C.H.O.K.E. and Astoria residents in Queens County Supreme Court, winning a major victory against the New York Power Authority. He speaks regularly at rallies, community centers and schools about the over-saturation of power plants in our community and the need for efficient and cleaner sources of energy.
As legal counsel to the Astoria Civic Association and United Community Civic Association, Peter Vallone Jr. organized numerous blood drives, anti-graffiti campaigns and bike-a-thons, benefiting the entire community. Additionally, Vallone Jr. has been protecting the public as a volunteer attorney for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn for over 10 years. In this capacity he visits various community centers, making many significant legal presentations concerning issues such as elder care. As an attorney, he focused on protecting our senior citizens from those who would prey upon them. His articles on such subjects have been published in numerous newspapers. He also served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Variety Boys and Girls Club of Queens, Inc.
Peter Vallone Jr. was born and raised in Astoria, Queens. He attended Public School 122 and Immaculate Conception Grammar School, where his mother was a teacher for over 20 years. He later enrolled in Mater Christi High School, renamed St. John's Prep, where he served as a Board of Trustees member for 10 years. Vallone Jr. graduated magna cum laude (with high honors) and Phi Beta Kappa from Fordham College in 1983 and from Fordham Law School in 1986.
Peter Vallone Jr. has two young daughters, Catherine, age 8, and Caroline, age 6, who attend public school. His commitment to education and appreciation of the arts has led him to become a member of the Advisory Board at the Rebecca Center for Music Therapy, where he uses his skills as a professional musician to help autistic children with interactive music. He also served as legal counsel to Sponsors for Educational Opportunity. An accomplished athlete, Peter Vallone Jr. was invited to play against the Chinese National Ping-Pong team on ABC's Wide World of Sports, and was Co-Captain of the Astoria Civic City Champion Football and Softball teams.
