A teacher by profession. He became the first state superintendent of public instruction in Colorado. He came to Colorado in 1870. He settled in Greeley and through the intervening years had an important part in shaping public interests of the common-wealth. In 1874 he served as a member of the Colorado legislature and was influential in formulating the school and land laws of the state.
