Las Animas County Commissioner: 1894
In the late 1870's ne was Justice of the Peace, a Water Commissioner, country Postmaster. Census enumerator in 1880, covering on horseback a district of ranch country 2,000 miles square, then populated by a few hundred people.
In the noted Star Route Trial he was a witness for the government, making 3 trips to Washington and for 4 months listened to congressional proceedings and notable trials in the courts.
In 1894 he was elected County Commissioner on a fusion ticket. In 1896 he was a candidate for state senator, but was defeated, and 20 years later in 1916 was again candidate for the same office running against the same opponent, this time was elected. He and his opponent had been neighbors and best of friends for over 40 years. In the 21st general assembly he was chairman of the committee on county affaris, also the committee on state affairs, public lands, also serving on agriculture, irrigation, horticulture, judiciary, labor, reapportionment and industrial relations.
He was deeply interested in the history of the state. By members of the 21st assembly he was therefore jocularly dubbed "Historical De Busk". His work in this line, however, is of the greatest value and is duly recognized and undoubtedly will be much appreciated by coming generations.
