Info | aren was born and raised in Chapel Hill. Her professional career focuses on serving the public interest – from designing and implementing programs at the Wake County Literacy Council, to local initiatives in Chapel Hill’s public housing communities, and her current work to improve health care in low- and middle-income countries at the Chapel Hill-based nonprofit IntraHealth International, where she serves as the Director of Business Development.
Prior to her election to the Town Council, Karen served the community in a wide array of capacities, including as chair of the Chapel Hill Public Housing Advisory Board, co-chair of the Ephesus Elementary School Improvement Team, a PORCH neighborhood coordinator, and a mentor for the Blue-Ribbon Mentor-Advocate program. She has also been active in school equity issues, LGBTQ rights, and Get Out the Vote and election protection efforts.
Karen earned an undergraduate degree in comparative literature from UNC-Chapel Hill and a graduate degree in English and secondary education from Boston University. Karen lives in the Booker Creek neighborhood with her wife, Superior Court Judge Alyson Grine, their two children, Hazel and Wyatt, two dogs, a cat, and a crested gecko. You can often find them hiking on local trails, on the sideline of Wyatt’s soccer games, or happily at home, fostering dogs in need of rescue. And finally, Karen is a ride-or-die Tar Heel basketball fan.
