Successful Businessman Selected as S.L. County Interim Auditor and Republican Candidate for Auditor
Sean Thomas, a local Salt Lake City businessman and entrepreneur, was selected by the Salt Lake County Council to serve as Interim Auditor. Mr. Thomas also won an election in the County Republican Central Committee to be their candidate for County Auditor with over 60% of the vote. Mr. Thomas is a resident of Salt Lake County, married with a family, and is an accountant.
In asking to serve as your County Auditor, its Mr. Thomas’ goal to bring his private sector experience, energy and success to County government. The Auditor of Salt Lake County manages the financial and accounting function of a $750 million organization. The auditor’s principle skill and expertise must be in management in order to effectively oversee the office that includes twelve CPA’s, four MBA’s, and other professionals. A key element for success is the leadership that Mr. Thomas brings to this responsibility.
The difference between Mr. Thomas and the other candidates is his leadership experience in the private sector. He served as the general manger of a mid-size company, with over $100M in assets, for six years, and has spent the last couple years in investment banking performing due diligence for mergers and acquisitions and raising capital for venture stage companies in the State of Utah. He serves as a trusted member of several Boards of Directors for companies that range from technology to utilities.
Essentially, Sean has been trusted with a large amount of responsibility in his career over people, assets, and budgets and now wants to use that expertise to serve you.
Sean understands the realities that businesses deal with in the private sector having paid commercial, residential, and business property taxes in Salt Lake County. Sean has been on the receiving end of government policies as a citizen, in small business, and as a taxpayer. He understands the burden of sales taxes as both a consumer and business owner. Mr. Thomas does not apologize for the success he has achieved at a young age. Nevertheless, Sean is well trained in the importance of traditional values such as integrity, ethics, and free and fair enterprise.
Sean understands that most government officials are completely disconnected from the consequences of the policies they implement and enforce. He believes you understand those consequences better than any politician. Sean has not previously been a government employee except for his three months serving as Interim Auditor.
A key component of Sean’s character is his integrity. Thomas believes integrity is an absolute prerequisite to serve as Salt Lake County’s independently elected Auditor. Sean is not beholden to any bureaucracy or any special interest. Sean believes it is very difficult for Government officials who have been in office most of their life to have a desire to lower taxes, shrink government, and shrink its impact on our lives.
Sean is running for County Auditor because he wants to serve the people on the outside of government, not the inside. Sean is running for County Auditor because he thinks the problem that office faces is a problem that stemmed from too little private sector experience. He is running for County Auditor because he wants to bring a tough new standard with fresh ideas, focused morals, and free market expertise.
When elected, he will bring better internal controls, institute new, tougher external controls, and restore public trust and confidence in the County. Sean will continue to defend the County’s Triple A bond rating by fighting against policy maker’s tendencies to spend your money in order to be popular.
